Intelligent Weight Loss Workouts: 45 Min of HIT'14 = "High Intensity Thinking" Help Resolve HIS New Year's Resolution

It's almost 2014! Actually it is already 2014; at least for my friends in the "Far East" (HAPPY NEW YEAR!) and thus almost too late for the annual "I want to lose weight" new year's resolution. Ok, you as a SuppVersity reader should actually know better, but just in case you are still planning to make the weight loss happen solely by increasing your workout volume, I would suggest that you replace some classic HIT training with the revolutionary HIT 2.0 - high intensity thinking regimen (warning: doing this too often may actually build more brain than muscle mass ;-). 

Well,... now that I take a closer look at the results of this recent study from the University of Quebec here,  I have to realize that this will only work if you are a man. But don't worry, I am pretty sure there is something to be learned for the ladies in the last SuppVersity article of 2014, as well ;-)

All jokes aside, your brain is a sucker for energy!

I guess you will be familiar with the over-cited fact that "the human brain is only 2% of the weight of the body, but it consumes about 20% of the total energy we need every day"... I know that's boring, but actually that's quite an important point, because it tells you that your brain is not just a sucker for energy, but also a sucker for new information, which will in turn increase the energy requirements of the insatiable heap of neurons in your skull. Why? Well, our brains need energy to process each and every of these information chunks - max. 30W per opeartion, if the currently heralded estimations are correct. I know that sounds tremendously much, but if we performed only one of these operations per minute, you would hardly burn the energy equivalent of 1/25 of a 70-85% chocolate bar during your high intensity thinking sessions.

Against that background it's all the more impressive that Emilie Pérusse-Lachance and her Canadian colleagues were able to measure a significant increase in energy expenditure, when they had their 35 subjects (22 men and 13 women; aged 24 ± 3 years) read a 10-page text and write a summary of approximately 350 words using a computer in the "mental work condition" of their study.

If you take a look at the data in Figure 1, you will also notice that the scientists original hypothesis, which was that they would observe a similar hyperphagic (=hunger ➲ increased energy intake) response to in the "mental work" condition as Chaput et al. who conducted two very similar studies in 2007 and 2008.  The actual study outcome does yet tell a different story: While the female study participant did in fact supercompensate for the extra-energy they had to spent, when they were not watching TV and lolling around like in the control condition, the men were probably so immersed in their thoughts that they simply forgot to eat... ok, I guess you already realized that this was an ad-hoc hypothesis to make sure you don't realize that neither I nor the scientists have any clue what the underlying reasons of this sex-difference were.

I would even guess that the women did not even notice that they were overcompensating. If you take a look at the subjective hunger scores that have been assessed by seven visual analogue scale questionnaires the participants had to fill...
  1. at the beginning (T-60/60 minutes before the buffet), 
  2. after the experimental session (T-15/15 minutes before the buffet), and 
  3. after the buffet-type meal (T0, T60, T120, T180, and T240).
...those will tell you that the ladies either claimed to, or actually weren't more hungry than in the control condition. In view of the irrefutable evidence that they still ate more (see Figure 1) this may look awkward. When it's all said and done, these contradictory result does yet only confirm that you cannot trust people, when they tell you "I am never hungry and actually don't eat that much.... I have really NO clue where that belly comes from". This may even be their own perception, but that does not change that it is usually not in line what happens at the buffets, dinner tables and - most importantly - during the snack breaks people take during not after their high intensity thinking regimen all over the world.

Bottom line: By now you should have realized that this article must not be taken too seriously. Though,... if this type of heavy brain lifting would have women eat 15.3% (=121kcal/day) more and men 16.1% (=267kcal/day) less every day it would probably have a non-negligible impact on your chances of living up to your new year's weight loss resolution in 2014.

But don't worry, ladies. Life is not so unfair as it may seem. All you have to do to achieve an almost level playing field is to convince him that a 45 min walk in the park with you is much more fun than 45 min of high intensity thinking. And if that's  not convincing enough, show him the data in Figure 3 and tell him that real exercise (in the study 45min of paced walking) will help both of you improve your energy balance - his by -31% (-516kcal) and yours by -23% (-184kcal).

Running

I have been told running is the best cardio exercises. It is also the cheapest. It's perfect for me cuz I don't want to  donate spend money on gym memberships, yet get an effective workout. So, I did some reading and found that the best training program which I can do on my own is the Couch to 5k running program, which over a course of 9 weeks train you to run 5k's in approximately 30 minutes.

New Plan, New scale.

I have been weighing myself on a very old non-digital scale. And it broke under pressure. The pressure I was putting on it to budge below 78kgs.
So I got a brand new digital scale, which will go well with my brand new plan. Well not completely brand new, I have made a few modifications to it.
To start with I am reducing my calorie intake just a tiny weeny bit. I realised I was eating healthy,

Reduced Exertion High Intensity Training - A Minimalist 2x20s HIIT Protocol For The Male Convenience Generation.

Laziness, it seems, is utterly human. If you look around, these days, it appears as if we were genetically programmed to be bone idle. And, from an evolutionary perspective, we may actually be. After all, moving around, hunting and gathering was an obligatory part of our lives in 99% of the human history. It was thus only consistent that our genes would tell us to sit down at the fireplace and relax, once we had found enough to eat on a given day... (un-)fortunately things have changed since those early days. Not only have we moved out of our caves, we have also found ways to radically reverse the ratio of activity to inactivity in our lives.

"Convenience" is the buzzword of the modern western civilization and the obesity epidemic is its unwanted consequence.

A consequence, which is yet by no means inevitable. After all, we all know that getting our behinds off our couches and into the gym, and setting the dietary recommendations of the (fast-)food industry, ahh... pardon, the government at naught would solve the problem, if ... yeah, if there was not this aforementioned genetically programmed laziness that makes the couch so much more appealing to us than the hard benches in the gym...

Sacrifice 30min per week of your TV-time and live to see your grandchildren graduate

A recent study from scientists from the United Kingdom does yet show that you could still spend more than enough time in front of your beloved television set, if you just performed what what Richard S. Metcalfe and his colleagues from the United Kingdom call the "minimal amount of exercise for improving metabolic health" (Metcalfe. 2011) - a 3x per week 10min exercise regimen with no more than two (yes, only 2x!) all-out sprints.

As you can see in the outline of the experimental protocol, the 29 healthy and normal-weight, but sedentary young (~23y) men (n=13) and women (n=16) did not even have to start with 2x20s sprints. They rather built up to it, by starting out with a single 10s all-out cycle-ergometer sprint at a braking force equivalent to 7.5% of their body weight in the first week of the 6-week study period and built their exercise capacity from there.

Note: If you have not read my previous blogposts on HIIT, you may have missed the information that interval training (not necessarily at the maximal intensity, though) is suitable for everyone - even heart disease patients (cf. Interval, not Steady State Aerobics is the Way to Go - Even for Patients with Myocardial Infarctions!). This has been confirmed only recently by Neil A. Smart et al. who found that "[i]ntermittent exercise may improve functional capacity [of congestive heart failure patients] to a greater extent than continuous exercise" (Smart. 2011) - and that despite the fact that both continuous (30min), as well as interval training (60min, 1 min cycling, 1 min rest) were performed at the same low intensity.
The rest of the 10-min exercise sessions, the subjects were pedaling along at 60W, which is about as much as it takes so that you do not fall off the bike, because of the lack of resistance that is required to stabilize yourself on the bike. The latter would have been tragic, at least if you are a man, because that would have counteracted the surprisingly (not for who has read about the magic of HIIT here at the SuppVersity before) profound effects this regimen, for which the scientists coined the name "reduced exertion high intensity training" (REHIT), had on the glucose homeostasis of the male subjects.

As the data in figure 2 shows, the statistically more than significant decreases in the area under the glucose (-12%) and insulin (-39%) curve (AUC) measured during an oral glucose tolerance test was exclusive to the 13 male participants - and that despite the fact that both, male as well as female study participants exhibited similar improvements in their individual VO2Max (+15% in men; +12% in women).

(RE)HIIT only for men?

As far as the underlying reasons for these gender differences are concerned, the scientists are pretty much at a loss, stating that this could be due to "the low statistical power of our study, with only eight female subjects performing the REHIT", " differences in metabolic perturbations during the brief high-intensity cycle sprints",  and the 3-day delay after the last HIIT session before the glucose tolerance test was done (as a SuppVersity reader you will be familiar with the notion that the "anabolic barn door" is wide open for 24-48h), so that "insulin sensitivity was improved in female subjects at an earlier time-point". Now, I do not want to sound like a himbo, but I would say that another observation the scientists made, provides a much better explanation:
[...] we observed that some of the female volunteers struggled with the transition from 60 W to the all-out sprints, and were unable to substantially increase their pedal frequency, and thus their power output during the sprints. This may have increased the aerobic contribution to energy supply and reduced glycogen depletion.
In other words, what was supposed to be a sprint turned out to be a sluggish ordeal. The slightly, but statistically significantly higher rates of perceived exertion (+10%) in the female study participants corroborates the assumption that the women simply did not burn enough glycogen. If we do now also consider the results of a 2008 study by Hagobia et al. who report that
[...] in women, exercise altered energy-regulating hormones in a direction expected to stimulate energy intake, regardless of energy status. In men, the response to exercise was abolished when energy balance was maintained.
It appears obvious that an increase in pedaling frequency by adapting the resistance to the individual fitness levels and dietary controls may be necessary to render this minimalist "REHIT" protocol productive for the fairer sex.

The comparison of this 6 week exercise program with the results of a 10 months intervention program in likewise healthy sedentary, but older men (45y) who exercised 3x a week for 40min (steady state) at 75-85% of their maximal heart rate, goes to show that it would well be worth making the REHIT protocol work for women, as well (Dengel. 1996). After all, the steady state endurance protocol in the Dengel study was not only four times more time-consuming (plus, the intervention period was 6.6x longer) than the modified HIIT protocol in the Metcalfe study, it also failed to improve the glucose response to the oral glucose tolerance test and produced less pronounced improvements in insulin sensitivity (cf. insulin AUC in figure 3). The mild caloric reduction (-300-500kcal/day) that was imposed on another group of the study participants, on the other hand, yielded similar reductions in glucose and insulin AUCs as the REHIT protocol in the Metcalfe study that was accompanied by a body weight reduction of ~10%, a reduction in body-fat of -5.8% and essentially no loss in fat free mass!
Note: Unfortunately, Metcalfe et al. did not measure the body composition of the study participants. In view of the results of the Whyte study (Whyte. 2010), I cited in the Intermittent Thoughts on Healthy Weight Loss, where the participants lost -2.4cm of their allegedly obese bellies within no more than 2 weeks of doing HIIT, as well as the well-established correlation between insulin resistance and the size of your beer-belly, it is very well possible that the male participants in the Metcalfe study will have lost some body fat doing no more than 8.67 minutes of all out cycling spread across 18 training sessions in 6 weeks... and if they didn't their diet probably was still too convenient ;-)

The (in-)convenient truth about your future

Taken together the results of these studies suggest that a) steady state aerobic exercise is pretty pointless, b) even a minimalist HIIT regimen goes a long way, as long as c) you really hit it hard and d) adhere to your regular (hopefully non-convenient) diet, or even better e) introduce a slight calorie deficit. In other words, without at least some "inconveniences" as far as nutrition and exercise are concerned, chances are that YOU will either remain or become one of the 34,004,946 obese human beings that are now populating a planet where the US alone spend 1,550,566$ per day on the detrimental health consequences of the"convenience" of its citizens (data from Obesity Statistics).

Update on Antioxidants & Exercise - Neither Vitamin C Nor E Have ANY Effect on the Response to Intense Exercise.

As a diligent reader of the SuppVersity, you have probably been following my posts on antioxidants and their potentially negative effect on the adaptive (hormetic) response to the exercise induced formation of reactive oxygen specimen. Although, I still believe that the theory may have its merit - especially in metabolically deranged people, where the exercise induced ROS formation would initially have to overcome the low-grade chronic "background" stress - it appears that for healthy people, and "moderately trained young men" on an intense exercise protocol, in particular, the ingestion of reasonable amounts (<1g of vitamin C and <400IU of vitamin E) does not pose a problem. At least this is what the results of two relatively recent studies by scientists from Washington School of Medicine (Higashida. 2011) and researchers from universities in Denmark and France (Yfanti. 2011) would suggest.

The hormetic benefits of inflammation

According to the mitohormesis hypothesis, the beneficial effects of exercise on health, in general, and glucose metabolism, in particular, are at least partly mediated by an increase in reactive oxygen species, which triggers downstream "hormetic" adaptation processes which result in increased oxidative capacity and insulin sensitivity, as well as a reduction in total inflammation (cf. previous posts on the work of S. Schmeisser and M. Ristow from the Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Leipzig. If this theory held true, or let's be more specific, if this theory which is largely based on observations in metabollically derranged, i.e. obese and/or type II diabetic subjects, was applicable to healthy people and athletes, as well, this could mean that the multi-vitamin, the vitamin C pills, the alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and all the other little helpers you have been taking religiously to increase your exercise performance would actually have hampered, not promoted your muscle gains, fat loss and whatever else you may have had in mind, when you hit the gym, the road, the field, the court or the green ;-)

Let me say this right away: As long as you have not been following the recommendations of dubious nutritional gurus and self-proclaimed fitness "experts" to take 10g+ of vitamin C and vitamin E supplements in the 3000IU+ range, the little vitamin pills and powders are probably not the reason that your biceps is not growing and your belly is just as fat as it was, when you began training.

As you can see in figure 2, supplementation with 500mg of vitamin C and 400 IU of vitamin E (more on the protocols used in the studies in figure 1) before and during 12 weeks of strenuous bicycle exercise training with a frequency of 5 sessions per week (HIIT, HIT and stead state, cf. figure 6) did increase the concentration of antioxidants in the blood of the 21 healthy, physically active subjects (age 18-40years) of the Yfanti study, who had not participated in physical exercise more than twice a week before the experiment. Despite higher vitamin C and E plasma levels, and contrary to the research hypothesis of the scientists, who had expected that the anti-oxidant supplementation would blunt the adaptive response to the exercise protocol,
[...] the present study showed that combined supplementation with vitamins C and E before and during 12 weeks of supervised, strenuous bicycle exercise training of a frequency of 5 days/week had no effect on maximal oxygen consumption, maximal power output, workload at lactate threshold, glycogen content, and CS and β-HAD activity in muscle.
In other words, supplementing with "reasonable" amounts of vitamin C and vitamin E had absolutely NO EFFECT (!) on the exercise induced metabolic adaptations or performance increases - that does yet also imply that taking anti-oxidants is of little benefit as long as the minimal dietary requirements are met... and if you still insist to poor money down the literally rat hole, you may be interested to hear that (assuming that the results from Higashida's rat study translate to humans), even 10g of vitamin C and 3000IU of vitamin E a day probably would not really make a difference - as long as you train heavy enough.

Of particular interest in this context is the effect of "mega-dosing" anti-oxidants on the exercise induced increase in insulin sensitivity, which has been reported to be impaired in previous studies (Ristow. 2009). As the data in figure 3 shows, the increase in glucose transporter (GLUT4) expression is slightly greater in the non-supplemented rats, BUT neither this difference nor the difference in measured 2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) transport reach statistical significance.

Moreover, Higashida et al. found no statistically significant differences in the increases of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD1 & SOD2) or PGC-1α, a marker for the mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, between the rats in the two groups (cf. figure 5).

Now, I a confused and don't know what to believe

So what does all that tell us? Well, we can now be relatively certain that supplementing with vitamin C and vitamin E is a waste of time and money for most of us. What we still cannot say for sure, though is why the Ristow study from 2009, which even made it to mainstream media news, found detrimental effects of supplementing with 1g of vitamin C and 400IU of vitamin E on the adaptive response to 4 weeks of 5days/week 20min steady state aerobic training + 45 minute circuit training + 20 min warm up + cool down (Ristow. 2009), while the Yfanti study, with 500mg of vitamin C and 400IU of vitamin E did not find any effects of supplementation...

...the only reasonable explanation I have is that the protocol in the Ristow study may not have been intense enough. Unfortunately there is no detailed information on what the subjects did in the course of the "circuit training", but if that was your usual sissy type walk from one machine to the next, chances are that the level of ROS that was induced by this "exercise" protocol was so low that it was completely blocked by the supplemental anti-oxidants. The "cycling protocol" in the Yfanti study, on the other hand, is pretty intense. If you look at the schedule in figure 6 you will concede that this is almost the way athletes (and maybe you) train.

All that being said, it appears that all is coming back to what I have been writing (and also saying on SHR) several times before: Controlled oxidation is likely to be beneficial. It's like the fire in the oven that keeps you warm - the one you carefully take care of, in order to prevent your whole house to catch fire... if you are a marathon runner, the latter can happen pretty quickly and you will need (tons of ;-) antioxidants and even that will probably not suffice. If you are the housewife on the treadmill, who walks at 5km/h for 20min two times a week, on the other hand, even a few milligrams of vitamin C and a few units of vitamin E will blunt the little oxidative "damage" that you do and your "efforts" to increase your insulin sensitivity or whatever your intentions may be will be sabotaged by your vitamin supplements.

This is what I am going to do

The key to loosing weight is obviously calories in < calories out. So start eating sensibly and more importantly portion control, which is my weakness. I gave up a lot of junk food when I got pregnant, so colas and burgers, french fries are something I don't have to battle. My battle is going to be eating a little less and keeping a tab on my sweet tooth.

One year..wow, doesn't seem like that long ago, when I made a promise to myself to lose weight and get back in shape and came up with a plan. I had been through numerous weight loss attempts earlier and had been successful too, but never realised that this time it

OK, I am going to do a quick post since I am super busy, but just can't go without updating here. So I am going to go bullet point at it:



Ran 25 minutes straight today! this is my third one in the last week and I think I am getting better at managing the pace and breathing. Also the slight drop in mercury levels seem to be helping me with the heat exhaustion thing
Weight is still steady at

I ran 20 MINTUES straight!!! no stopping, no walking!! YaY!!

but that euphoria was short-lived. I came back and had a terrible heatstroke again. Inspite of taking precautions of having a snack before running, drinking lots of fluids before and after I had nausea, vomiting, the works and my BP had shot to 177/130. All my plans for a laid back holiday were out the window. Poor hubs was running

Science Round-Up Seconds - GABA & Exercise: Both Can Improve and Mess With Your Sleep. Plus: Natural GABA Alternatives and Sleep As An Overtraining-Gauge

Don't forget that and prioritize proper sleep hygiene over pills and powders.
Let me make get this straight, yesterday's episode (please note that at the minute I post this article, the download is not yet working, should go up within the next hour, though) of the Science Round-Up on Super Human Radio was not only ultra-long (120min+), it was also largely speculative. If you already listened to the show, you will know that Carl and I took up on a discussion Dan Rollins triggered on his, Carl's and my Facebook page(s). Contrary to what you would expects Dan felt that gamma-Aminobutyric acid aka GABA would not help him calm down and let him sleep. For him GABA turned out to have stimulative rather than sedative effects.

I am not going to repeat all the potential explanations I went through in the first ~40min of the show here. Instead, I'd suggest you simply download the podcast and listen to the various hypothesis which range from (a) the general issue of whether or not GABA even crosses the blood-brain-barrier, over (b) the possibility that the GH spike, the sedative (low blood glucose) and the agitating effect (catecholamine + cortisol release with very low blood glucose) could all be brought about by a GABA induced increase in insulin production and a corresponding reduction in blood glucose levels to (c) potential confounding factors such as caffeine consumption (Roca. 1988; Desaulles. 1991; Mukhopadhyay. 1995), interactions with beta alanine, taurine or glycine (Tiedje. 2010; El Idrissi. 2013; Kletke. 2013), (d) genetic differences as with the tingling for beta alanine (Macphee. 2013) or (e) the influence of exercise on the density of GABA receptors in the brain (Dishman. 1990).

Enough of the speculations: What are proven alternatives

Against the background that we still don't really know why Dan and others don't seem to benefit from GABA supplementation the way Carl and Alisa do, we do know that there are other natural alternatives:

  • Valerian [dosage: 400-900mg] - inhibits breakdown of GABA in the brain; assuming that GABA makes it across the blood-brain-barrier, valerian would thus work synergistically with oral GABA 
  • Due to its anti-PPAR-gamma effect ginseng also made it into the list of "agents that may help you to stay lean" I posted earlier this year. Want to know about the other "20 Anti-Obesity Agents Have the Potential to Inhibit Fat Gain Right at the Cellular Level"? Here you go!
    Ginseng [1-2g crude root extract or 200-600mg of extract] - ginsenoids compete with GABA on both the GABA-A & GABA-B receptor and are thus thought to exert their calming (only in low! doses) effects on the CNS via direct GABA-ergic effects; sedative effects have been observed for Panax ginseng (Korean or Asian ginseng), Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng), and Panax vietnamensis (Vietnamese ginseng); if you feel agitated, reduce the dosage
  • Kava kava [180-210mg of kava lactones] - the active agents in Kava kava belong to a group of resinous compounds known as kava lactones or kava pyrones, they bind to the benzodiazepine binding site of the GABA receptor, which could reduce the risk of unwanted excitatory effects
  • Passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) [4-8g as a tea] - has been used as a sleeping aid for centuries; chrysin, a mild anti-estrogen appears to be the active ingredient (GABA-A binding; cf. Zhai. 2008); warning: must not be consumed by pregnant women (!) PI can initiate uterine contractions
  • I know you don't want to hear that, but(!) don't forget that it could also be your BCAA product that keeps you you from falling asleep and makes you wake up several times during the night by blocking the uptake of tryptophan and thus depleting your brain of the raw material for serotonin (read more).
    Hops (Humulus lupus) [0.5g of dried herb] - has binding affinities to both the melatonin and serotonine receptor (Abourashed. 2004) and can increase GABA in the brain (Franco. 2012); warning: must not be consumed by women with a (family) history of breast cancer (!) hobs has mild, but distinct pro-estrogenic activity (Hajirahimkhan. 2013)
  • L-tryptophan [1g] / 5-HTP [100mg] - both will increase serotonin and could thus be stacked with agents that act on GABA; incidentally, there is paucity of research on the efficacy of either of the two as sleep aid
  • Melatonin [1-10mg] - as both Carl and I pointed out on the show, melatonin is not an acute sedative, but a signal that it's time to "shut down", don't expect it to actively "send you into sleep", like a sleeping pill
Aside from these agents, Carl and I talked about accupuncture and low energy emission therapy (LEET), as well. While the mechanisms of the former are still not fully understood (e.g. Kwok. 2013), the amplitude modulated high frequency fields the LEET mouthpiece emits right into your brain have been shown to modify the release of GABA and the concentration of benzodiazepine receptors in the rat brain. In addition, low level electromagnetic fields can directly induce the release of melatonin in mammals (Reiter. 1993).
If you are sprinting because of the increase in EPOC, you are a fool.
Read more about exercise and energy expenditure tomorrow! With the info on energy expenditure also crammed into this article it would have been too packed. Therefore you will have to live with a 24h deleay until you learn about the energetic costs of bench pressing, the laughable EPOC effects of HIIT and the evidence that exercise does not just make you hungry. If you feel that's not tolerable, you can already learn about the pathetic EPOC effects of HIIT and exercise & hunger in previous articles.
I already hinted at the physiological (side?) effects of chronic endurance training on the expression of the GABA receptors in rodent brains early in the show (and this article). It should thus not surprise you that exercise can have major impacts on the onset, quality and duration of your sleep - both positive and negative ones, obviously [based on data from Youngstedt (1997; published online 2003)]:
  • "90 Min Sleep Restriction Changes in Insulin Resistance Last For One Week"
    Timing of your workouts: While working out 4-8h before bed will have you fall asleep easily, you may experience problems if you have to ignore the onset of tiredness, because you have been exercising more than 8h before you go to bed or to close to hitting the hay. Incidentally, working out 4-8h before bed another advantage: It will help you to sleep through.
  • Working out outdoors: The light exposure, the fresh air all that makes working out outdoors so healthy for you (as long as you are not living in Beijing ;-) will energize you and could keep you from falling asleep.
  • Duration of your workout: There is a U-shaped dose-response curve for the negative effects of working out on your REM sleep. As Carl rightly pointed out during the show the negative effects of short exercise durations (<1h) is probably in as much a question of intensity / exhaustion (you train intense, when you train short) as the cumulative effects of "exercising" for more than 2h straight (which is by the way more than twice as detrimental for your sleep quality than the <1h exercise)

    Aside from its effect on the workout duration will also affect your overall sleep needs with both exercises in the 1-2h and exercises in the >2h range having a major impact on the amount of time you got to spend in bed to recover.
  • Exercise intensity*: With a high propensity of low intensity exercise to help you sleep through, a walk on a treadmill in the evening is not going to compromise a good nights sleep, the HIIT workout that would improve your postprandial triglyceride response on the next day (I used this SuppVersity Facebook News as a discussion starter in the live-show), on the other hand may have you wake up several times during the night (*note: I used the studies on the post-exercise heat load in Youngstedt et al. as a proxy for intensity).
If you wanted to distill some practical advice on how you can / should exercise to avoid that your workouts will interfere with your sleep, you should (a) leave at least 4h between any intense workout and hitting the hay (HIIT, weight lifting, etc.) and (b) make use of the beneficial effects of moderate duration (20-40min) light intensity workouts (walking on an incline treadmill, cycling etc.) on sleep onset and quality.
Did you know that...
there are other agents that can "spike" GH temporarily?
  • intravenous (iv) insulin 0.2 IU/kg - 50x increase
  • intramuscular (im) glucagon 1 mg - 21x incr.
  • iv. arginine 20 g/m² as an infusion over 30 minutes - 11x incr.
All observed in a human study involving 18 perfectly healthy young men(Rahim. 1996).
In view of the effect GABA has on the release of insulin from the pancreas, it is not unlikely that my previously voiced hypothesis that the "relaxation" and the "agitation" are responses to low and very low glucose levels would also explain the increase in GH as a response to the hypoglycemic effects of insulin.
What can you take away from the first part of this installment of the Science Round-Up Seconds?
  • GABA does not work for everyone
  • esp. in higher doses GABA can have excitatory, instead of calming effects
  • the exact reasons that this happens is not clear; temporary hypogylcemia is albeit not the least likely candidate
  • the hypoglycemia would also explain the GH release which is yet very unlikely to have beneficial effects on muscle growth (GH & gains don't correlate) or fat loss
  • among the GABA alternatives, those with a specificity for the benzo docking site on the GABA receptor could work for people for whom GABA itself is excitatory
  • working out too late / too intense can compromise sleep
  • being "tired but wired" indicates sympathetic overtraining (too much intensity)
  • constant fatigue + an increased sleep demand, but light and ineffective sleep is more indicative  parasympathetic overtraining (too much volume)

Heatstroke while exercising



Family Doctor's advice: 



I talked to my doctor yesterday and he said my symptoms are that of a heat stroke and that the best way to get over it is to stay hydrated. He suggested drinking water, limbu sharbat, orange juice if I started feeling a headache coming on or if I already have one. The Vitamin C in the juice will also help with the nausea.

Argghh! this Mumbai heat is killing me! I know I complaint a lot about the heat here, but today I have a very valid reason. I do not cannot tolerate heat and am very prone to heat strokes. Sort of runs in the family and got it from my mother.

There been no exercise for the past two days as Aunt flo is paying her visit and coz of the pms'ing and cramping.Since I saved on the exercise time today and left early for office, I decided to walk down from churchgate to nariman pt instead of taking a taxi.
And what better way to cheer up mid week than a walk down marine drive, on such a pleasant morning.

Seriously guys, I really wanted to do the Jillian Michael's 30DS shred today, but didn't have enough time today. I woke up 10 minutes late, enjoying the cozy bed and pleasant weather after the recent heat spell in Mumbai. I managed to finish my Week 5 Run 1, but that just didn't leave

Remember last night how I said I did not feel any soreness or like I had exercised? Well I was wrong!! I woke up this morning and  EVERYTHING. HURT!!!!

Still I pushed through and did a week 4 run and half of the 30 DS. Half because my toddler was up when I was halfway through, thought the workout was some kind of game and started jumping all over me! Here's a sweaty but happy me after my run

30 DS: Day 1



Started the day at 5.45 inspite of it being a holiday and really surprised myself. Took a short but brisk walk of 20 mins before returning home for the first day of the 30 day shred.



I haven't bought dumbbells yet, will only buy once I am sure I can commit to this kind of workout.

So the workout is ~25 mins with warm up and cool downs. I found it pretty easy in the beginning.

I heard about  Jillian Michael's on spark people. So I looked her up and the 30 day shred workout that everyone seems to be raving about. Turns out it is a very famous work out at home video which has been very popular in the US. I googled for reviews and almost everyone has seen good results with the videos. So I looked it up on you tube and downloaded the video for level 1.

Completed a run from C25K week 4  and was feeling on top of this world until i stepped on the scales; 71.4 kgs: a gain of 1.2 kgs from the 70kgs last week. ‘Weight loss is 70% food and 30% exercise” seems to be the widespread conclusion of people who have successfully lost weight. The numerous blogs that I follow and articles that I read, all say the same thing. I believe it too. My initial weight loss attempts more or less involved controlling what I eat and how much I eat and the strategy has proved to be somewhat effective, but not completely
