Pistachio Phenols 90% Bioavailable. Phe, Leu, Glu & Trp - Four Satiating Aminos. Artificial Sweeteners Act as Anti- Convulsants. Dendrobium for Glucose, Lipids & Kidneys

Since I am a little pressed in time, I won't beat around the bush, but rather get to the meat of the matter of this Nutrition Quickie, right away... well, actually today's nutrition quickie has no item on meats, but is has one Dendrobium, which is actually rather a supplement - be that as it may, here you go:
  • Since you (hopefully ;-) haven't swallowed a bomb colorimeter, it's actually no wonder that your body can only access 75% and 95% of the energy this little oven can squeeze out of almonds and pistachios. If you went with the Atwood factor (which says fat = 9kcal/g) and simply added fats, proteins and carbs the discrepancy for almonds would even increase to ~35% (Nowotny. 2012)
    Almonds deliver 25% less calories that the nutritional label will tell you (Gebauer. 2012) -- At the FASEB meeting in April 2012, already, scientists from nowhere else than the mighty USDA, respectively the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center of the USDA presented the results of a human study that clearly shows that our tummies cannot squeeze out more than 75% of the nutrients a bomb calorimeter does. Nutrition Quickie: 25% Less Kcal in Almonds Than Label Says.

    The caloric value on both food labels and respective nutrient tables is thus off 25% too high. And the corrected energy content per 100g of almonds is 456kcal/100g not 575kcal/100g (nutritiondata.com), or even higher values you will find when you google  "almonds kcal" - I am curious if at least the nutrition labes will ever be updated.

    A similar but less pronounced mismatch has been found for pistachios by the same researchers earlier this year, already. According to a paper published in the January edition of the British Journal of Nutrition (Bear. 2012), the actual energy content of these heart healthy nuts 565kcal/100g, which is ~5% less than the currently established value. 

  • Bioavailability of pistachio polyphenols, xanthophylls, and tocopherols is very high - until you put them into a muffin (Mandalari. 2013) -- Bioavailability, i.e. the ratio of the total amount of a certain molecule that's in the food we eat in intact or at least active form in our bloodstream, can be a real issue for many of the good things the spectral analyzer of brainy scientists detects in our foodstuff.

    In the upcoming January issue of Nutrition a group of researchers from the UK and Italy report the results of an investigation into the bioavailability of polyphenols, xanthophylls (lutein), and tocopherols (among them the rare gamma-variety) from raw pistachios, roasted salted pistachios, and muffins made with raw pistachios. You can see the original polyphenol, xanthophyll and tocopherol (mind the 90% gamma-tocopherol content, which has better chemoprotective effects than alpha-tocopherol; see "Vitamin(S!) E" post from 2011) content in table 1.

    Interestingly enough the availability of the tocopherols was almost identical for all three tested forms (raw, roasted, in muffins) and even the muffin reduced only the bioaccessability of protocatechuic acid (78%) and luteolin (36%), the rest of the phenols achieved the same ~90% Madalari et al. observed for the raw and roasted + salted pistachios in their million dollar model of the human digestive tract (click here for an article about this "artificial gut")

    • When the gut "tastes" phenylalanine (PHE), leucine (LEU), glutamate (GLUT) and tryptophane (TRP), satiety ensues (Daly. 2012) -- In their most recent paper Christin Daly et al. report on the cholecystokinin (CCK) release in the gut. According to the scientists from the University of Liverpool (UK) and the Kyushu University (Japan), the effect is mediated by interactions with the gastrointestinal bitter taste receptors. Since CCK inhibits food intake and reduces appetite, this provides another mechanistic explanation for the satiety promoting effects of high protein intakes. The effects was observed only for the L- and not the D-amino acids.

      Interestingly, the beneficial effects of  PHE, LEU and GLUT on CCK (but not the TRP-stimulated CCK secretion) were blunted in the presence of gurmarin. "Gurmarin?" Yeah, that's the rodent specific  sweet taste inhibitor in Gymnema sylvestre (note gurmarin does not work in humans; cf. Sigoillot. 2012), which is sold as an anti-diabetes supplement. Inosine, on the other hand increased the CCK release n response to all of the amino acids.

      How significant that is specifically for those who have a problem keeping their ravenous appetite in check is however questionable. After all the satiety response to CCK has been shown to be disturbed (at least in rodents; cf. Balaskó. 2012)

      Acesulfame potassium, cyclamate and saccharin are potential anti-convulsants (Talevi. 2012) -- It may sound counter-intuitive in view of all the bad stuff you have probably heard about artificial sweeteners, but it is their particular molecular structure and similarities between the T1R3 sweet taste receptor they are supposed to bind to ant several metabotropic glutamate receptors from different species that is probably behind the anticonvulsant effects a group of researchers from the Department of Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

      The overall effect size the scientists observed in their rodent model (see table 2) is yet far from earth shattering and generally more pronounced if the sweeteners had been ingested 4h instead of just 20 min before a Maximal Electroshock Seizure (MES) test. Whether this makes them worth "supplementing" is however more than questionable.

    • Putting things into perspective: While the DPPH radical scavenging activity is not a really good measure of the in-vivo anti-oxidant potency of a given molecule it may yet still be worth mentioning that the one of Dendrobium (IC50 = 29.6 μg/mL) is more than 80% lower than that Areca catechuvar. Cinnamon cassia, Paeonia suffruticosa and Alpinia officinarum extracts which share IC50 values <6µg/mL (Lee. 2003). In other words, you need 80% more Dendrobium than cinnamon, for example, to neutralize the same amount H2O2 radicals.
      Dendrobium extract ameliorates renal fat accumulation, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in rodents on "high fat" diet (Lee. 20012) -- While I cannot say if this is the same Dendrobium extract that's used in a pre-workout supplement that's "all the craze", these days, I can tell you that a group of researchers just published a paper on the renoprotective, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of an extract from Dendrobium moniliforme (a cursory search revealed that even within this genus of orchids there are at least 90 sub-types ranging from Aochidori to Yuten).

      Lee et al. administered the methanolic extract at dosages of 200mg/kg (HED ~16mg/kg) for nine weeks and reduced the elevated serum glucose, total cholesterol concentration and renal lipid accumulation in the HFD-fed mice. It also ameliorated renal dysfunction biomarkers including serum creatinine and renal collagen IV deposition. So that the scientists conclude that methanolic extracts from Dendrobium moniliforme exhibit pleiotropic effects on obesity induced parameters and exert renoprotective effect in HFD-fed mice.

        Natural H. Pylori Treatment and a Brief Overview of its Ill Health Effects & the Scientific Debate About Whether its Eradication Would Necessarily be Good for Us

        An H. pylori infection is not exactly a death sentence, but it can still have nasty consequences.
        Over the past decade H. pylori has repeatedly been in the focus of scientific research. It has been linked with gastric carcinoma (Parsonnet. 1991; Huang. 1998). The summary of odds-ratio of a 198 meta-analysis by Huang et al. for example shows increases of cancer risk of 92%, 124% and 81% in infected patients for all studies, cohort, and case-control studies, respectively. The meta-analysis also found that "H. pylori–infected younger patients have a higher relative risk for gastric cancer than older patients with odds ratios decreasing from 9.29 at age ≤29 years to 1.05 at age ≥70 years." (Huang. 1998).

        But cancer is only the "worst case" scenario, when it comes to the potential (ill) health effects of being infected with H. pylori.

        The Helicobacter pylori bacterium has also been associated with in cases of chronic gastritis, functional dyspepsia, peptic or duodenal ulcers, and cancer or gastric lymphomas.
        "Because it can survive in acidic environments, it remains intact in the stomach and promotes the destruction of the gastric mucosa. This makes the organ sensitive and vulnerable to triggering of ulcerative lesions and blocks the sterilization of food, producing failures in the digestion process." (Bonifácio. 2014)
        Atrophic gastritis, which is a common consequence of rampant H. pylori infections, may cause pernicious anemia because it interferes with the absorption of vitamin B12 from food. The symptoms of gastritis in general are burning, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, feeling of satiety and gastrointestinal bleeding.

        One question that arises is: How likely is it that you are infected?

        With worldwide prevalence estimated at between 50 and 90%, this type of cancer frequently occurs in developing countries. And one of the most comprehensive reviews of the literature confirms, the answer to this question may well depend on where you live.

        As a brief glimpse at the data in Table 1 shows, the number of infected individuals is lowest in Japan (in kids) and highest in African immigrants to Australia.
        How is H. pylori transmitted? Laboratory studies have yielded evidence in favor of both faecal-oral and oral-oral pathways. However, a role for either waterborne or zoonotic transmission has not been ruled out. Overall, "the failure of investigations to single out a mode of transmission for H. pylori signals the possibility of multiple transmission pathways." (Goodman. 1995)
        A classic, pharmacological "H. pylori" eradication scheme that would of which recent studies show that it is more effective if a metronidazole-based therapy is chosen over the standard clarithromycin-based therapy (Nishizawa. 2014), is yet something you should only contemplate if you have actually been diagnosed with the nasty gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium. If you only suspect being infected or want to reduce your risk of being affected, the following natural H. pylori treatments are certainly preferable to the nitroimidazole antibiotic medication metronidazole:
        • Feijoa sellowiana (O.Berg) is one of the natural anti-H. pylori agent (Basile. 2010)
          Feijoa sellowiana fruits have been shown to inhibit the growth of Helicobacter pylori by Basile et al. in 2010.
        • Leaves of Strychnos pseudoquina ST. HIL. (Loganiaceae) or rather a methanolic extract from these leaves which have been used traditionally as malaria treatment has been shown to be effective in a rodent study by Silva et al. (2005).
        • Chamomille or more specifically an extract from the inflorence of the camomille flower (Cogo. 2010).
        • Achiote (Bixa orellana) or rather a tincture that's made from the seeds of this shrub or small tree originating from the tropical region of the Americas (Cogo. 2010).
        • Green Yerba mate leaves are another effective H. pylori treatment as Schubert et al. point out in a 2006 paper. Whether drinking mate tea will do the same, has not been established, though.
        Maybe H. pylori  is not always bad!? As strange as it may sound, some scientists argue that the contemporary evidence that "with modern life, for probably the first time in human history, there are large numbers of noncolonized persons" and that this decrease in H. pylori infections was associated with an increase in gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), Barrett's esophagus, and adenocarcinomas of the gastric cardia and lower esophagus. These diseases are not directly related to H. pylori, but "colonization with cag+ H. pylori strains appears protective against these diseases." Accordingly, the authors of one of the more recent papers elaborating on this hypothesis conclude: "[I]n the 21st century, the continuing decline in H. pylori may lead to the disappearance of duodenal ulcers and distal gastric cancers and toward a marked increase in GERD, Barrett's esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma." (Blaser. 1999)
        • Garlic extracts are another of the better-known H. pylori treatments (Cellini. 1996)
        • Pistacios, or rather the mastic gum from Pistacia lentiscus (L.) var. chia (Duham) has been found to inhibit H. pylori growth by Paraschos et al. (2007).
        • Malva sylvestris inflorences and leaves have been shown to inhibit the growth of H. pylori by Buffon et al. (2001)
        • False rubarb, aka Rheum rhaponticum roots have been reported to be effective H. pylori killers (Cogo. 2010).
        • Pomegranate peels exhibit anti-H. pylori activity, as well (Hajimahmoodi. 2011).

        Next the aforementioned plants, fruit and fruit parts which are usually used as methanolic or aqueous extracts, there is a good dozen of essential oils of which a recent review by Bonifácio et al. (2014) indicates that all of them exert significant inhibitory effects on H. pylori (see Table 2).

        As you can see in Table 1 the major problem is that in vivo studies, i.e. studies in which the oil was tested in intact organisms, in the case of the essential oil from Cymbopogon aka lemongrass the anti-H. pylori effects were observed in vivo, as well (in a mouse study by Ohno et al. (2003), to be precise).

        Against that background it remains to be seen if any of the previously mentioned oils, fruits, plants and plant extracts are "strong" enough to eradicate a rampant H. pylori infection in a living human being. What appears to be likely, though, is that they could prevent it from becoming "rampant" in the first place.

        Bottom line: While the is conclusive evidence that certain strains, but not all forms of H. pylori increase your risk of developing gastric cancer. There is (a) evidence that some strains may actually protect you from developing other gastrointestinal diseases (see red box) and (b) insufficient data from in vivo studies to recommend any of the previously listed agents as an "effective replacement" for the standard course of antibiotics doctors usually prescribe to eradicate H. pylori.

        That being said, it is non unlikely that the regular consumption of garlic and pistacios or the use of essential oils from lemon grass could protect you from being infected or infections from flaring up | Comment on Facebook!

        The Pistachio Manifesto: Antioxidant, Metal Chelator, DNA Protector, Anti-Cancer Agent, Bug Killer (incl. H. Pylori & Herpes Simplex) & More. Have You Been Missing Out?

        This is not exactly what I was talking about, when I said "going nuts", but in this case it would actually qualify as "going pistachios" ;-)
        Walnuts, almonds and Brazil nuts, these are the stars among the hard-shelled fruits people tend to go nuts about (all puns intended ;-). Pistachios, on the other hand, get very little love. I have in fact written about their surprisingly low effective energy content and their highly bioavailable phenolic content before (learn more), but what the myriad of phenols in these small nutritional powerhouses the ancient Egyptians used as incense, preservative and breath sweetener, while their Iranian neighbors in the North East already knew about their beneficial effects on digestive, hepatic and kidney health (Avicenna. 2008) can do for our health has not been covered here at the SuppVersity.

        So what is it pistachios can do for you?

        With their traditional use as a remedy for digestive, liver and kidney issues, you already have an idea where this could be heading. The shelled fruits of which we know that they have been part of the human diet for at least 9,000 years and that's cultivated in the Middle East, United States and Mediterranean can however do more for you:

        • Histidine happens to be an excellent chelator and potential weight loss adjuvant, as well (learn more)
          Potent antioxidants: Different parts and constituents from P. lentiscus  have been shown in vitro radical scavenging properties They protect your LDL molecules from being oxidized and will thus have direct beneficial effects on your atherosclerosis and overall heart disease risk (Holvoet. 2004).
        • Metal chelators: A 2011 study by Orhan et al reports that pistachios (P. terebinthus fruits) are potent metal chelators (on par with EDTA) and have an impressive radical scavenging activity. Interestingly engough, the Antioxidant activity of the fruits actually seems to increase, when they are roasted (Orhan. 2012).
        • DNA protection: More or less a downstream effect from the high content of antioxidant compounds, specifically gallic acid, digallic acid and 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose, and polyphenols have direct protective effects on cellular DNA and pro-carcinogenic mutations.
        • Antimicrobial activity (incl. anti H. Pylori): Certainly among the most interesting effects are the anti H.Pylori effects of α- pinene, a compound from the essential oils in pastachios (speficifally P.atlantica var. kurdica). Other ingredients, like verbenone, rterpineol, and linalool showed high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis (Koutsoudak. 2005).

          Sakami et al. report similar beneficial effects against pathologic bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella melaninogenica) antiplauqe activity on teeth by inhibiting bacterial growth in saliva (Sakagami. 2009). Özçelik et al. add noticeable anti-viral effects to the list of anti-microbial activities of pistachio species (Özçelik. 2005). The viruses tested in the study were Herpes simplex (DNA) and Parainfluenza viruses (RNA). The effects were significant for both Kernel and seed extracts.
        • Anti-inflammatory activity: Extract of the resin of P. lentiscus var. Chia and its isolated phytosterol tirucallol exert direct anti-inflammatory effects on human aortic endothelial cells and inhibit the activity of adhesion molecules that express the inflammatory cytokine TNF-α (Tzakou. 2007). Tzakou et al. ascribe the effects to phytosterol that goes by the name if tirucallol - never heard of it? Me neither, but who knows on which supplement label you may find it in the future ;-)
        • Digestive health: I already mentioned this in the introduction. One of the most important traditional uses of gums from Pistacio species is the management of gastrointestinal disorders; and that has been confirmed by several studies (Rahimi. 2009 & 2010; Farzaei. 2013). Resin of P. lentiscus has been shown to significantly reduced the intensity of gastric mucosal damage induced by pyloric ligation, aspirin, phenylbutazone, reserpine and restraint with cold stress  via its  antisecretory and cytoprotective activities (Al-Said. 1986)

          A double- blind  placebo controlled trial, P. lentiscus gum lead to significant improvement of the symptoms of patients with functional dyspepsia  (Dabos. 2009). Extracts have been successfully tested in experimental models of acute colitis and IBS (Rahimi. 2013), and there is supporting evidence for beneficial effects of P. lentiscus var. chia resin in patients with established mild to moderate active crohn’s disease (CD) after 4 weeks of supplementation (Kaliora. 2007a,b).

          Antidiabetic activity: This is not about the nuts, but about a leaf extract, which has demonstrated significant acute postprandial  antihyperglycemic activity comparable to metformin and glipizide in starch-fed rats, in which it also lead to significant overall improvements in glucose tolerance (Kasabri. 2011). Unfortunately, a study by Kasibri et al. does not support these results - at least not for normoglycemic and streptozocin-induced hyperglycemic rats (Kasibri. 2004) on a regular diet.

          This would suggest that there is a direct correlation with carbohydrate intake, and voilá a 2007 human study confirmed that the gum, not the leaf extract can effectively, lower blood serum glucose levels in men... however, there is another "on the other hand attached here": this did not work for the female study participants (Triantafyllou. 2007).

          Anti-cancer effects: In a relatively recent review of the literature, Giaginis & Theocharis call pistachio mastic gum a "conglomeration of effective anticancer drugs" (Giaginis. 2011) - probably not without reason, after all they cite a plethora of scientific data from peer-reviewed studies to support the anticancer activities of mastic gum and its major constituents and highlighting the various molecular mechanisms through which the triterpenoids work their anti-cancer magic.

          Rezaei et al., for example were able to show that the fruit extract of P. atlantica sub. kurdica exerts direct inhibitory effects on human colon carcinoma cells that was comparable to the drug Doxorubicin (Rezaei. 2012). Another example? Well what about the anti-breast cancer, anti liver-, anti cervical and anti skin-cancer effects of oleoresin (Almehdar. 2012)
        • Hypolipidemic effects (=lowering high blood lipids): Extracts from P. vera  fruits have shown beneficial effects on HDL and LDL level in rabbit model of atherosclerosis, they exert positive effects on the lipid levels of patients with moderate hypercholesterolemia (Edwards. 1999). And have several animal studies to support their anti-artherogenic effects (e.g. Bakirel. 2003) 
        Impressed? Well I'd hope so, after all this turned out to be more work than I initially thought, when I started to "just write a brief overview of the health effects of pistachios" ;-)

        Bottom line: Ok, I have to admit there is no scientific evidence that all the good things mentioned above are going to happen to you, if you have a handful of pistchios every other day, but you know what? It may still be a piece in the puzzle people often refer to as "healthy diet" - so if you are into nuts and can "afford" their relatively high energy content, go for it! After all, the above are only the "confirmed" effects.

        Note: Actually everybody can "afford" eating nuts, it's more a question of being able to stop before the whole 500g family pack is annihilated... and trust me, if you love nuts, this can happen pretty fast, even if you have to shell them as it is the case with pistachios.  

        Last but not least, in traditional Iranian medicine, certain ingredients in pistachios are known to exhibit various additional pharmacological activities incuding diuretic, lithontripic, anti-tussive, anti-rheumatic, anti-asthmatic, anti-hypertensive, and aphrodisiac effects of which Bozorgi et al. point out that the "are not [yet] supported by any current scientific documents and so, they could be considered  for investigating by researchers." (Bozorgi. 2013)
